Color and finish trends

Pantone Color of the Year in the Office with Cloud Dancer

The 2026 pick is a soft white. Here is how it works in a commercial space, and what 2027 color and finish trends mean for your next project.

Commercial meeting room with an oak table, cream boucle chairs, and an oak slat wall with floor-to-ceiling windows

By Alex Will, Founder of Beckon

The Pantone Color of the Year for 2026 is Cloud Dancer, a soft, airy white. It is the first white Pantone has chosen since the program began in 1999, and it raises a fair question: what does a white look like in a working office?

The answer is better than you might expect. A white like this gives your furniture, finishes, and brand colors a calm place to land. Here is how to use it, which color and finish trends to plan around for 2027, and where to be careful.

Calm base. Considered color. Built to last.

Meet Cloud Dancer, Pantone's first white

PANTONE®11-4201 TCXCloud Dancer

Pantone describes Cloud Dancer as a lofty white that signals calm and a fresh start, a response to a world that feels loud and overstimulating. It calls the shade a key structural color, one that supports other colors instead of competing with them.

Pantone also describes it as balancing warm and cool, so it reads as a softly unbleached white instead of a clinical one.

  • Pantone code: PANTONE 11-4201
  • Announced: December 4, 2025
  • Approximate screen value: #F0EEE9
  • Its job in a palette: a calm base that lets other colors stand out
"A white like Cloud Dancer gives a workspace room to breathe. It stays out of the way, so your people, your furniture, and your brand color can do the talking. Start with a calm base, sample it in your own light, and build everything else around how your team actually works."

Where Cloud Dancer works in a commercial space

Treat it as a base, not a feature. These are the places it earns its spot.

Walls, ceilings, and circulation

  • Use it across reception, corridors, and open work areas as a calm field for brand color, signage, and art.
  • Pantone describes the shade as bringing a feeling of spaciousness, which can help in tighter floorplates and rooms with limited daylight.
  • Pair it with warm woods and natural textures so it reads inviting instead of stark.

Laminate and casework

  • Choose a matte or low-sheen finish. It cuts glare and shows fewer fingerprints on high-touch surfaces like workstations, conference tables, and reception desks.
  • Sample your white across laminate, paint, and solid surfaces together. Whites from different sources drift warm or cool.
  • Set white casework against a warm woodgrain to add depth without adding clutter.

Seating and upholstery

  • A soft white fabric shows wear quickly in a busy lobby. Specify commercial-grade, cleanable performance fabrics in high-traffic areas.
  • Save the lightest upholstery for quieter zones like executive offices, lounges, and phone rooms.
  • Add texture, such as bouclé or a woven weave, so a light palette still has depth.

Lighting

  • A white shifts more than any other color under different light. Judge every sample under your own fixtures, at both warm and cool color temperatures.
  • Choose high-CRI fixtures so finishes read the way you specified them.
  • Check samples in San Diego's changing coastal light, from bright midday sun to a marine layer morning.

Sample it. Light it. Then commit.

Color psychology and what a calm base does for people

Color affects mood, and design practice links certain colors with certain responses. The effects vary by person, culture, task, and lighting, so treat color psychology as a starting point for decisions instead of a guarantee.

Focus zones

  • Soft blues and muted greens are commonly linked with calm and concentration.
  • A Cloud Dancer surround keeps the visual field quiet for heads-down work.

Collaboration zones

  • Warm accents like clay, amber, and terracotta are commonly linked with energy and conversation.
  • Use them on one wall, a lounge chair, or a table surface, and keep the rest of the room light.

Brand moments

  • Reception, entries, and town-hall spaces are where color tells people who you are.
  • A white base gives your brand color room to stand out without competing.

Calm where people work. Color where people gather.

2027 color trends to plan around

Pantone has not named its 2027 Color of the Year yet. It usually announces in early December, and we will update this post when it does. Until then, here is what the 2027 Pantone color trends and the wider forecasts are pointing to. For the layout and furniture side of 2027, see our office design trends for San Diego businesses.

What Pantone has said so far

  • Pantone's Home + Interiors 2027 forecast, presented in March 2026, groups color into seven palettes: Delight, Allure, Lucid, Hush, Honest, Grounded, and Elation, under the theme Sense-Abilities.
  • Hush leans toward quiet light and muted midtones tied to calm and wellness, which suits focus areas and wellness rooms.
  • Lucid centers on blues and greens, and Grounded draws on organic earth tones. Both are natural fits for quiet zones.
  • Honest draws on warm browns, reds, and oranges, which suit lounges and break areas.
  • Allure brings dramatic, elegant color, best used in small doses for executive suites and client-facing moments.

What other forecasters point to

  • WGSN and Coloro named Luminous Blue, a saturated sapphire-like blue, their 2027 Colour of the Year.
  • Across forecasts, warm neutrals, earthy greens, and deeper blues keep appearing, while cool gray fades.
  • Cloud Dancer's balanced white fits this direction, because it works as a base for those deeper colors.

Finish trends for commercial surfaces

  • Industry reports show matte and low-sheen finishes leading the decorative laminate market.
  • Textured surfaces and realistic woodgrains keep growing, and warm woodgrains and earthy neutrals are taking over from cool gray.
  • Fingerprint-resistant, easy-clean surfaces are a growing request for shared furniture.

Warmer. Softer. Easier to live with.

How to choose laminate colors without chasing a trend

A Color of the Year lasts a year. Furniture and casework often stay for a decade or more. Choose accordingly.

Keep trend color on layers that change easily

  • Put bold color on accent walls, upholstery, accessories, and soft seating.
  • Keep casework, laminate, and flooring in warm, flexible neutrals that outlast a trend cycle.

Choose the finish before the color

  • Decide on matte, textured, or woodgrain first, because finish drives how a color looks and wears.
  • Review samples of each finish in the same lighting.

Build the palette as one set

  • Review laminate, paint, fabric, and flooring together on a single board.
  • Check them in your actual light, at the height they will live.

Trend on the surface. Timeless underneath.

How we choose color with you

Beckon's commercial interior design and commercial furniture services work from one palette, so color carries through every surface. Our process keeps it simple:

  • Discover how your people work and what your brand needs to say.
  • Design a palette across paint, laminate, fabric, and finishes.
  • Visualize the space with 3D renderings so you see the palette in context.
  • Approve the palette, budget, and specifications together.
  • Deliver the finished space through one team, installed and ready.

One team, one call, one less thing to worry about.

THE BECKON BACK PHILOSOPHY

A calm space gives people a reason to return

Color is one of the fastest ways a space tells people who you are. A calm, warm base gives your brand room to show up, and gives your team and your guests a place they want to be. That is the idea behind Beckon Back.

Beckon them in. Make them want to come back.
